It is a portentous time in the State of Arizona. This Thursday, July 29, State Bill 1070, the infamous "Papers, Please" statute, will take effect. The United States Justice Department and the American Civil Liberties Union of Arizona (whose lawsuit is underwritten with a donation from VVM) have asked the courts for an injunction putting the law on hold until legal challenges can be heard. In the meantime, VVM executive editor Michael Lacey
makes clear this company's stand on the issue: The bill is an abomination that can't be allowed to stand.
Phoenix New Times staff writer Stephen Lemons was at two federal-court hearings in Phoenix on Thursday and
detailed the eleventh-hour proceedings. VVM will continue to provide ongoing coverage of the S.B. 1070 battle as part of its special series
