Rick Lazio is all over the place these days, including cable talk shows in which he's blasting the notion of a mosque near the Ground Zero site. It's all part of his attempt to steal Andrew Cuomo's thunder in the New York governor's race. But as Wayne Barrett reports in this week's Village Voice, Lazio, a former investment banker, may be drumming up populist sentiment against the mosque in part because he'd rather not discuss something else: newly disclosed emails between Lazio and Charles E.F. Millard, the controversial former head of the federal Pension Benefit Guaranty Corporation. Those emails disclose a $900 million deal that was ultimately thwarted by federal investigators, but which, had it gone through, would have represented a scandalous example of insider influence. Barrett's story has already drawn the notice of the New York Times' DealBook blog.
